  Brandy at 12 years old

The following was originally printed in the April 1978 Gordon Setter newsletter:

“Brandy was given to me at the age of seven; he was at the vet’s to be put to sleep, former owners feeling that he was getting old, cranky, etc. Brandy came home with me.

We had quite a lot to learn — he did not like to be handled, was not lead broken and didn’t know many commands. Slowly he learned to stack, walk on lead, etc., all accomplished on the idea that he was like an uneducated puppy.

Evidently whenever he didn’t understand, he would growl and this had won him many battles until we met. When not working, he was like a puppy, carrying a squeeker or dumbell around the house, hoping I would play with him. I entered him in a match or two and slowly we got together.

Brandy finished in five months at 7 3/4 years of age. He is just the most fantastic dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning. No one would know he is 8 1/2 as he still runs the house and bosses the kennel. Is Brandy old or cranky — never — he will always be a fun, rollicking, bombing, fantastic puppy!

He’s good in everything except keeping his fanny on the floor and still for the long sit and long down.

I hope everyone feels the same way about their Gordon as I do mine — they never get old, just better.”
